Your Money,
Your Government

Welcome to RIOpenGov.org giving Rhode Islanders an open look into how your Rhode Island government is spending your hard-earned tax dollars!

RIOpenGov.org puts powerful online tools in your hands to further explore the “truth in numbers” about the crucial pension reform debate in the Ocean State. On this site, you can search and sort the raw data, provided directly by official government agencies, view much of it in eye-catching graphics displays, and change COLA assumptions on your own.

RIOpenGov.org gives you easy access to a wealth of public information - presented objectively – and allows you to dig as far as you want to go, and to draw your own conclusions.

By making key information accessible, our open government website plays an important transparency role by allowing citizens to better understand how their government actually works and how it spends taxpayer money. This website may even allow citizens to identify and report instances of fraud, errors, or government waste.

To get started, click either the “State Pensions” or "Municipal Pensions" tab above - or the large buttons to the left; and please take the time to register to view our interactive data displays.

The data used in this website are public records obtained from the Employees’ Retirement System of Rhode Island (ERSRI) and from the organizations that adminster the various local municipal retirement plans. Additional retiree information has been requested from a number of locally managed municipal pension systems. For a full list and update of these systems … click here.

If you notice an error, please contact our Center for freedom immediately by emailing us at info(at)rifreedom.org.

Thank you for your vigilance and for visiting RIOpenGov.org!

All Cities and Towns May Already be in “Critical Status”

The centerpiece of the governor’s proposed legislation to let municipalities’ independent pension plans suspend annual cost of living adjustments (COLA’s), includes a ’60% critical status’ test that may be irrelevant. While we support the concept of providing “tools” to Rhode Island municipalities, the distinction of which localities are in crisis – and which are not – may be an unnecessary exercise.
